Little Nemo: contains every Little Nemo newspaper strip from its prime era. I first encountered Little Nemo in a NES game about a thousand years ago. Since then, everyone from Bill Watterson to Moebius cites him as an influence.
I found this on the cheap and decided to dive in. First off, this book is awkward as hell to read/5. Little Nemo: Return to Slumberland is a sort of "reboot," of the old Nemo stories in which a boy travels to the magical world of Slumberland when he dreams, where any fantastical imaginings are possible and there are an endless supply of adventures.
While I appreciated the artwork, which is bright, colorful, resolved, and filled with imaginative details, I didn't find this super 4/5. Previously I had seen Nemo in 'The Best of Little Nemo in Slumberland' and in the slim collection published by Dover, but neither of those books do McCay's work justice.
This volume, because of the quality of its color, but more importantly because it's /5(25). A digital library of classic comic strips, featuring Winsor McCay's Little Nemo and George Herriman's Krazy Kat. This book presents the best of the early Little Joe comics, flowing with violence, humor and warmth in a low-key style, not unlike Gray’s more famous Little Orphan Annie.
Some happy few will certainly discover Little Joe’s riches, and it can be hoped their enthusiasm will spread the good word of Harold Gray’s other great strip.

My thought: Little Nemo in Slumberland was the masterpiece of the pre-modern (modern=20th Century-post WWI) newspaper medium. It's as amazing as Cinemascope was roughly 50 years later, and singular in evocative detail.
Perhaps Harriman's Krazy Kat and Sendak's best books reach this level of artistry and personal ingenuity. Winsor McCay. The Complete Little Nemo – Winsor McCay.

I felt the introduction did not set up the book very well, and the strip is wearisome to read for long periods of time, but it's also absolutely amazing A-R-T/5.
Both of the main works in his comics oeuvre, Little Nemo in Slumberland and Dream of the Rarebit Fiend, deal with dreams or nightmares. Based on sheer volume alone, these strips were no small matter: color episodes of Little Nemo and over blackand- white episodes of Rarebit Fiend—that’s almost 1, dreams in just over two decades.
